"We are not ready to provide a specific opening date." That's the statement VAI Resort's public relations team released in September 2025 and gave to ABC15 that October, the latest word on when the billion-dollar entertainment complex rising off Loop 101 in Glendale will actually open its doors. A year later, the line hasn't changed. In the meantime, the cities around the resort have filled their fall calendars with dated, named events.
Since VAI broke ground near State Farm Stadium in 2021, its opening date has moved from late 2023 to late 2025 to sometime in 2026 to, as of an April 2026 update, no committed date at all. Meanwhile, Goodyear's parks department already has a fall calendar with actual dates on it. Avondale's Billy Moore Days carnival already has its five dates set for October and November. Litchfield Park already threw its Old Hollywood party, at a hotel that didn't need a construction crew to pull off the theme.
A Timeline That Keeps Sliding
VAI Resort was pitched to the Glendale City Council in 2020 under a different name, Crystal Lagoons, with 630 rooms and a spring 2023 opening. By 2022 the project had a new name, a bigger footprint, and a bigger promise. By October 2025, Glendale's city manager, Kevin Phelps, described the growth in blunt terms: the project had gone from roughly $350 million to close to $1.3 billion, and the room count had climbed from 600 to 1,100 across four towers.
Every expansion has come with another delay. In 2024, VAI's marketing team told reporters the resort would begin opening in phases in late 2025, with the rest arriving through the first half of 2026. By September 2025, officials walked that back entirely, saying they'd announce a firm date only 9 to 12 months before opening. By April 2026, with the end of the year less than nine months away and still no announcement, local reporters concluded a 2026 opening was effectively off the table.
The delays haven't been purely a construction story. In May 2025, Glendale voters split on two ballot measures tied to the project. Proposition 401, which would have allowed office buildings and a parking garage on part of the site, failed. Proposition 402, which rezoned the land for commercial use, passed. Separately, the state authority that owns State Farm Stadium sued the city over parking rights tied to the resort, a case that was still open as of last fall.
What's Actually Attached to the Name
None of this means VAI is vaporware. The plans are specific enough to name. The amphitheater is built for 11,000 seats with a $50 million stage and a Live Nation booking partnership. Konos Island, a 50,000-square-foot artificial beach and party island, and the 130-foot Konos Sky Bar are both real structures under construction, not renderings. Chef José Andrés has a signed restaurant, Bar Mar, that will be his first Arizona concept, part of a planned lineup of 12 signature restaurants.
Mattel Adventure Park, the theme park going in next door with Hot Wheels, Barbie, and Thomas & Friends attractions, is on the same track. A park representative targeted late 2024 at one point, and the timeline later shifted to 2025. As of April 2026, officials had given no new timeline for it either.
None of that changes what a resident of Goodyear, Avondale, or Litchfield Park does this weekend. It's a landmark under construction, not a substitute for a calendar.
Goodyear Already Locked In Its Fall
Goodyear's parks and recreation department has posted specific dates for the season. A Movie in the Park runs October 17 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Goodyear Community Park. The city's Fall Festival follows on October 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Goodyear Ballpark. A Veterans Day Festival is scheduled for the week of November 2 at Goodyear Civic Square, and Chalk Art in the Park runs November 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Goodyear Recreation Campus. None of these events are contingent on anything else finishing construction first. They're on the city's own events calendar, dated and located.
Avondale's Carnival Dates and Dia de los Muertos
Avondale's Billy Moore Days carnival runs across five separate dates this fall, October 3, 9, 14, and 30, plus November 7, according to the city's parks and recreation listings. The city also has an Avondale Dia de los Muertos gathering set for November 7. The final carnival date and the Dia de los Muertos gathering land on the same day, so November 7 is a full one in Avondale.
Litchfield Park Already Had Its Old Hollywood Night
VAI's planned steakhouse describes itself, on the resort's own site, as a callback to Hollywood's golden era. Litchfield Park didn't need a rendering to pull that off. On September 11, the West Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce held its annual Awards Gala at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. This year's theme was Old Hollywood Glamour, and organizers expected more than 500 business owners, elected officials, and community leaders to attend.
Litchfield Park's Fall Festival of Arts follows on November 7 and 8. And a few miles away, the P.W. Litchfield Heritage Center broke ground in March 2026 on a permanent home inside the historic Litchfield and Denny family house, a hilltop property on what was once the 20-acre Rancho La Loma estate. The first phase of renovation includes eight galleries, a gift shop, and a terrace facing the Estrella Mountains. It's a real construction timeline with a real start date, on a project a fraction of VAI's size.
Here's a snapshot of what's already on the books across the region this fall:
| City | Event | Date | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodyear | Movie in the Park | Oct. 17 | Goodyear Community Park |
| Goodyear | Fall Festival | Oct. 24 | Goodyear Ballpark |
| Avondale | Billy Moore Days Carnival | Oct. 3, 9, 14, 30 and Nov. 7 | Citywide |
| Avondale | Dia de los Muertos | Nov. 7 | Avondale |
| Litchfield Park | Fall Festival of Arts | Nov. 7-8 | Litchfield Park |
| Goodyear | Veterans Day Festival | Week of Nov. 2 | Goodyear Civic Square |
| Goodyear | Chalk Art in the Park | Nov. 14 | Goodyear Recreation Campus |
What the Math on VAI Actually Says
Officials have said publicly they need 9 to 12 months of notice before VAI can open, so ticket sales, staffing, and room bookings have time to catch up. As of late September 2026, no such notice has gone out. Run that promise forward and the earliest realistic opening window lands somewhere in mid to late 2027, not this year and likely not early next year either. That's not speculation about the resort's intentions. It's just what their own stated process requires, applied to the calendar as it stands today.
None of this is a knock on the project. An 11,000-seat amphitheater and a Michelin chef's first Arizona restaurant are worth the wait for the people who want them. But the West Valley was never a waiting room. Goodyear's ballpark, Avondale's carnival grounds, and the Wigwam's ballroom all had their fall booked before VAI poured its first slab, and they'll have it booked again next year whether or not a date finally sticks.
